#CelebrateYourVote in Prospect Park

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, NYC Votes joined Celebrate Brooklyn last Friday for a special voting rights concert, entitled “Vote, It Ain’t Illegal Yet,” at the Prospect Park Bandshell!

The acclaimed author, screenwriter, producer, critic and Brooklyn native, Nelson George curated an ambitious program blending film, music and spoken word. Performances, by artists including Burning Spear and NYC Youth Poet Laureate Ramya Ramana, explored the journey Americans have taken towards equality at the voting booth – and the distance we have left to travel.

The NYC Votes team registered new voters, helped experienced voters update their registrations, and answered questions about the upcoming NY State elections! We are grateful to Alpha Kalpha Alpha, Brooklyn NAACP, Headcount, and the New York City League of Women Voters for joining us in this effort. Volunteers used #TrendUrVoice, a digital platform powered by our partners at Voto Latino & Rock the Vote, to register voters.

Missed the concert but still want to be a registered voter? Register now! The deadline to register to be eligible to vote in the state primaries is Friday, August 15.
