July’s #FilingDay Will Be Twice as Nice
Friday, July 10, 2015
With the end of the July 4th weekend, it’s time to look forward to the CFB’s annual mid-July Filing Day! For this year’s July 15th disclosure deadline, 45 candidates who are currently registered for the 2017 elections will file a statement, as will eight newly registered candidates for the election in Council District 23.
Six of the eight registered candidates in district 23 are running for city office for the first time. Here is some advice for the candidates who will be filing a disclosure statement with the CFB for the first time:
- Don’t forget to claim for match any monetary contributions from NYC residents. You cannot go back and redo this!
- Create a scanning routine for the “backup documentation” that’s required for contributions your campaign is claiming for match. Once you have entered the monetary contribution into C-SMART and scanned the backup, upload the PDF into C-SMART.
Contribution Type | Documentation Required |
Check | Copy of check |
Cash | Copy of contribution card |
Money Order | Copy of contribution card and copy of money order |
Credit Card | Copy of credit card contribution card, including proof of processing |
- Make sure that you’ve entered all of your committee’s financial activity into C-SMART. A good way to check is to compare your filing to your committee’s bank statements.
- Enter your transactions into C-SMART accurately. What you type is what will be published in the CFB’s searchable database.
- Don’t wait until the last minute! File anytime starting July 12th until the deadline on July 15th.
- If this is your first time using C-SMART, schedule an appointment to submit your CFB and NYS BOE disclosure with your Candidate Services Liaison. (Bring your BOE Filer ID and pin number).
- Got questions? Read Chapter 4 of the CFB’s Campaign Finance Handbook or contact your liaison.
- Come in for a Compliance and C-SMART training to fulfill your campaign’s requirement or if you want a refresher!
