NYC Candidates Focus on Locally-grown Contributions

Wednesday, September 3, 2014

The CFB’s comprehensive post-election report, By the People: The New York City Campaign Finance Program in the 2013 Elections, released yesterday shows that candidates in last year’s elections overwhelmingly relied on small, locally-grown contributions.

Two stories in the New York Times yesterday, by Matt Flegenheimer and David Firestone, tied together a few of the highlights of our report:

  • Candidates raised 92% of their contributions from individuals while just 8% came from political committees, unions or business entities.
  • Two-thirds of those individual contributions came from New York City residents.
  • Two-thirds of those New York City contributors gave $175 or less.

We’ll be sharing more details from the report on the blog in the coming days. In the meantime, we urge you to read the report and check out the cool interactive maps showing the contribution patterns.
