Vote Better NY Advances in 2015-16 State Legislative Session

Thursday, June 9, 2016

On May 3rd, the Vote Better NY coalition traveled to Albany for Voter Day, a day designated to urge state lawmakers to modernize our elections. The coalition of community and good government groups met with 74 legislative offices that day, and has, since then, seen very promising responses to their efforts as a number of legislators have signed on as sponsors to our bills:

  • 19 new sponsors on the Voter Empowerment Act.
  • 37 new sponsors on early voting.
  • 17 new sponsors on the Voter Friendly Ballot Act

In addition, the coalition is pleased to report that early voting bills were recently voted out of the Senate and Assembly elections committees, which are strong steps towards their ultimate adoption in both houses.

But there is more to be done and any citizen advocate can chip in.

Between now and the end of the state legislative session, June 16, the coalition is focused on getting legislators who have not sponsored the bills on their agenda, to do so.

That’s where you come in! We’ve drafted a letter requesting legislators to sign onto the platform. Please take a moment to email the letter to lawmakers the coalition met with on Voter Day who still need to sponsor our bills. Here’s the list of legislators and their e-mail addresses.
