Amy Loprest Testifies Before City Council on Bills to Improve Voter Education and Participation in City Elections

October 15, 2012
New York City Campaign Finance Board Executive Director Amy Loprest testified before City Council Committee on Governmental Operations on several bills that would improve voter education and participation in all elections.

"Several states have spent this year discussing and enacting legislation to restrict Americans’ access to the ballot box. Some have rolled back hard-won early voting laws. Others have imposed new voter ID requirements,” Amy Loprest said. “That’s why I’m so pleased we are here today discussing legislation that aims to make it easier for New Yorkers to vote, to provide them the information they need to participate in a meaningful way, and to embrace new technology that could further enhance the role of small-dollar contributors in City elections."

Bills that were discussed include Intro 769, which would expand the CFB's esteemed Voter Guide to cover State and Federal elections; Intro 613, which would require the CFB to provide email notifications to voters regarding important election deadlines and dates; and Intro 764, which would allow political contributions by text messaging.

The full testimony is available on the CFB's website.
