Nonpartisan “Get Out the Vote” Effort to Encourage Young and Newly-Registered Voters to Get to the Polls on Election Day
November 3, 2016
NYC Votes announces the launch of a nonpartisan “get out the vote” (GOTV) campaign designed to encourage young and newly-registered New York City voters to get to the polls on Election Day.
The campaign will help voters learn about their voting rights, who is on the ballot, and where to go to vote. Highlights of the NYC Votes GOTV campaign include:
- Direct mail: More than 26,000 Election Day reminder postcards will be sent to young voters (18-29 years old) who live in the lowest voter turnout neighborhoods in each borough.
- Phone banking: Volunteers will call more than 5,000 city voters from November 5 to November 8.
- Email: Election Day reminders will be going out to more than 1,700 young voters who registered at an NYC Votes event in 2016.
- Public Service Messages: Social media and print advertisements will direct voters to voting.nyc for all the information they need to vote on November 8.
“New Yorkers are excited to get to the polls on Tuesday, and this GOTV campaign will help make sure they’re ready to cast an informed ballot when they get there,” said Onida Coward Mayers, director of Voter Assistance at the New York City Campaign Finance Board. “It is critical that New Yorkers make their plan to vote on Tuesday right now! This is a big event in all our lives, and everyone needs to make sure they are prepared to do their part.”
The polls in New York City will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8.
Voters may request an absentee ballot in person at one of the NYC Board of Elections offices until Monday, November 7. To be counted, absentee ballots must be postmarked by November 7 or delivered in person to one of those offices before 9 p.m. on Election Day.
