NYC Votes! Welcomes Online Voter Registration

August 16, 2012

Today, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New Yorkers, starting immediately, will be able to register to vote and update their voter registration information online through the State Department of Motor Vehicles website.

Art Chang, chairman of the CFB’s Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC), released the following statement:

“Today’s announcement will transform New Yorkers’ relationship with their democracy by making it quick and easy to participate. Online voter registration is an essential element of a 21st century election system. It will make the voter registration process more convenient, more accurate, more efficient, and more cost-effective. Giving voters the ability to update their information online will ensure that New Yorkers can always stay engaged, and we commend the Governor for taking this important step.”

For more information about how online voter registration works, check the NYS DMV website.

The VAAC’s 2011-12 Annual Report, published in April 2012, recommended that New York State adopt online voter registration.
