Statement from Amy Loprest, Executive Director of Campaign Finance Board, on Proposed New York City Council Legislation

December 11, 2012

We agree with Mayor Bloomberg. We think it is a terrible bill.

New Yorkers should be outraged that the Council is rushing this legislation through at a time when our campaign finance system is being held up as a model for reform in Albany and around the country.

Groups may endorse candidates and ask them for a photograph and other materials in order to announce their endorsement to members. The charge that the CFB has or would restrict groups from doing so is nonsense.

The bill would allow corporations, which currently are barred from making contributions, and unions to cooperate directly with candidates and not have that spending count against the candidates' spending limits.

If enacted, Intro-978 would create a huge loophole in the City's campaign finance system.
