CFB Statement on Campaign Finance Legislation Introduced in City Council

December 14, 2016

The New York City Campaign Finance Board issued the following statement on the campaign finance legislation that was introduced in the City Council in November:

“The Board continues to believe it would be best to defer action on the bills introduced in November rather than move forward at this time. Some of these bills could be improved further. However, we recognize and appreciate the Council’s efforts to take our feedback into account.

Specifically, the revised version of Int. No. 1355 makes substantive changes that reflect our concerns and maintains the CFB’s ability to protect the public funds invested in the Campaign Finance Program.

We commend the Council for embracing many of the Board’s long-standing recommendations to make the program easier for candidates to navigate and further enhance our system’s robust protections against the impact of special-interest money in our elections.

New York City’s landmark public matching funds program has thrived and succeeded over nearly three decades because the law has been adapted time and time again by the Council to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving political landscape."
