Statement on Supreme Court Decision Overturning Key Provisions of the Historic Voting Rights Act of 1965 by Art Chang, Chair of the Voter Assistance Advisory Committee

June 26, 2013

“Like many New Yorkers, we are disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision overturning key provisions in the Voting Rights Act and we are concerned for what this may mean for voters here and in the rest of the country. Through our NYC Votes campaign, the Voter Assistance Advisory Committee will continue to work with our partners to urge New Yorkers to exercise and protect their voting rights here in the five boroughs. We cannot allow this setback to undo any of the progress we have made together.”

NYC Votes is the nonpartisan voter engagement campaign of the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) and its Voter Assistance Advisory Committee (VAAC). In addition to promoting voter registration, participation, and civic engagement in New York City through its many programs and partnerships, NYC Votes sponsors the city’s official Debate Program and produces the citywide Voter Guide.
