NYC Votes announces the release of NYC's official, nonpartisan Voter Guide to the 2016 congressional primaries on Tuesday, June 28. The guide provides information about the candidates who will appear on the ballot, as well as instructions on where and how to vote. Polls in New York City will open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. on June 28.
Voters registered in the Democratic and Reform parties have the opportunity to select their party's candidates for the general election in November.
- The Democratic Party has contested races in seven congressional districts. Voters registered in the Democratic Party living in those districts will cast a ballot to select their candidate for Congress.
- Reform Party voters living in six districts will be able to write in the name of a person to be the party's candidate in November.
These are closed primaries, which means you must be enrolled in a party to be eligible to vote in that party’s primary. Learn more about the party enrollment rules in New York and check your party enrollment status.
NYC Votes partnered with MapLight, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization that tracks money in politics, to launch Voter's Edge New York, an online guide to candidates on the ballot in New York City throughout the 2016 elections.
To use the tool, voters simply type in their home address to see a page with all of the contests that will appear on their ballot. The page is supplemented with information about the candidates, including endorsements, funding sources, editorials, news articles, summary information, and biographies.
"The primaries on June 28 are the next big milestone in this historic election year," said Amy Loprest, executive director of the New York City Campaign Finance Board, which runs the nonpartisan NYC Votes campaign. "I urge all New Yorkers eligible to vote in this election to make their voices heard."
