1. What is the most important issue in Manhattan you would address if elected?
The biggest issue facing Manhattan is the lack of affordable housing. As Borough President, I will use my vote on Land Use and Zoning decisions to include 30% affordable housing in all new developments. I will appoint a Deputy Borough President for Affordable Housing who will work with community groups and city agencies – and proactively plan for a Manhattan where the people who built up our city can afford to raise their families in the neighborhoods they created.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
We must end the idea of Manhattan as an island for the very rich, with enclaves for the very poor and nothing in between. I want to empower communities by giving them the resources to plan for their own futures, so we aren’t always stuck reacting to the latest mega-project. I will implement an Urban Planning Fellowship to utilize the talent of our local universities. Top students will work in the Office of the Borough President on community planning projects. I will work to ensure that public spaces are preserved and not privatized for the exclusive use of the wealthy. My office will make sure that every new mother is provided with enrollment forms for Child Health Plus coverage before they leave the hospital. I will implement a Youth Sports League and an after school jobs program to give our kids a safe alternative to the streets.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I’m a lifelong New Yorker – I grew up in Washington Heights, attended public schools and CUNY. In Albany, I’ve been a reformer who gets results. I’ve never been afraid to stand up to the leadership of both parties to advocate – loudly – for an issue that would benefit the New Yorkers I represent. I know how to stand alone, I know how to build coalitions and I can take that knowledge with me to the Borough President’s Office.
