1. What is the most important issue in Staten Island you would address if elected?

Controlling overdevelopment and relieving traffic congestion are among the top priorities for Staten Island. Having completed the largest downzoning on Staten Island in 40 years, I will continue zoning reforms to protect the character of neighborhoods and to ensure that the quality of life and the quality of homes on Staten Island are preserved. I will open roads in Fresh Kills for traffic relief and create left-turn lanes to ease congestion Island wide. I created four park-n-ride facilities on Staten Island to encourage mass transit use and I will bring new fast ferry service to Staten Island. Staten Island has the lowest crime rates in New York City and we will continue to lower it by adding a fourth police precinct for our Borough. And as I have done in the past through my budget allocations, I will continue to ensure that our public safety personnel have the tools they need to protect our residents.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

As Borough President, I will continue to enhance Staten Island parks and add to the 9,800 acres of parks that make up 25% of Staten Island’s land area. Creating more recreation is vital, and several new ballfields, soccer fields, playgrounds and other facilities will open soon. Reviving the North Shore railroad will be a top priority, and I also will continue to attract light industry and jobs to Staten Island. In addition, I will continue to open up the waterfront for public use as I did with the South Beach Boardwalk. I will establish the Borough’s first senior retirement village in Charleston and open four new public schools in the coming years.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

My 25 years of experience in public office and my ability and willingness to work with elected officials of all parties are unique qualities I bring to the office. I have a track record of negotiating for Staten Island. Bringing the Heart Institute to our Borough and opening up Bloomingdale Park for recreational use are just two examples. I have produced results, not just promises. The South Beach Boardwalk is a prime example of what my experience, vision and commitment can accomplish for Staten Island. I have also been endorsed by leading uniformed services and law enforcement organizations, including the PBA. My ability to get things done for the people of Staten Island has been demonstrated over the past 3 1/2 years.
