1. What is the most important issue in Council District 4 you would address if elected?
Education: We need an improvement in reading, math and science scores so our children are properly prepared for life – and teachers deserve a pay increase as a reward for those results. I will fight for the additional funding that Albany has unfairly denied our children, using the Council’s oversight powers to be sure these funds are used wisely.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Quality of Life: Laws are useless if they are not enforced. I will work to supply adequate funding to guarantee the enforcement of quality of life offenses, especially excessive noise and congestion due to unlicensed street peddlers.
Jobs and Growth: The City’s over-reliance on the financial services industry is dangerous to our economy. I want NYC to expand in the fields of bio-technology, entertainment, and the arts.
Transportation: I support construction of the 2nd Avenue Subway, and want to force real reform at the MTA, whose mismanagement continues to put this much-needed project in jeopardy.
Budget Reform: We need to seriously prioritize city spending because we’re hurting the least fortunate in our city. The budget deficits on the horizon dwarf anything we’ve seen before, and threaten the poor and working class if we do not reform the current budget process.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I’m an independent thinker. When the Mayor is right, I’ll work with him and give him the political support necessary to help move our city forward.
And when I disagree with him, as I did on the West Side Stadium plan, I’ll let him know it, without the kind of partisan obstruction that we see so often.
Our district has a history of electing independents, regardless of Party. I am proud to run in the tradition of Andrew Eristoff, Charles Millard, Bill Green and Roy Goodman.
