1. What is the most important issue in Council District 5 you would address if elected?
Improving the quality of our public schools. I’ll focus on issues that are important to schools citywide – reducing class size, attracting good teachers, enhancing after-school activities and expanding programs for gifted and talented students. But I’ll give special attention to schools here on the East Side and Roosevelt Island. I have worked with East Side parents to get our kids a gymnasium – the district’s first – and I have partnered our schools with local libraries and cultural institutions. As a City Council Member, I’ll continue working hard to make sure local schools meet our children’s needs.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
As Gifford Miller’s District Chief of Staff, I’ve learned that the issues that matter most are often the issues closest to home. Whether it’s helping residents quiet down a noisy bar, sprucing up a local park, or saving a bus stop that seniors depend on, I know how important these quality-of-life issues are in our daily lives. I’ll continue to work to with tenants to strengthen our rent laws and continue fighting to make sure the 91st Street Marine Transfer Station never reopens. And I’ll use my experience to make sure the City Council balances the budget responsibly and protects vital services that keep New York thriving and livable.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I’ll bring to the City Council the experience I’ve gained over the past seven years, a keen understanding of the district’s neighborhoods, and the energy and ideas to be a force for reform on the Council. I’ll continue to work closely with residents and community groups to solve local problems, but I’ll also make sure we look ahead to meet the city’s long-term challenges – from our schools to affordable housing to mass transit to economic growth. I’m proud to have won the support of Speaker Miller, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Senator Liz Krueger, Assemblymembers Pete Grannis and Jonathan Bing, and so many other community and Democratic activists. I hope I can earn your support, too, on September 13th.
