1. What is the most important issue in Council District 22 you would address if elected?
For the past four years I have worked to keep our city, our environment, and our children safe while representing the 22nd Council District. As Chair of the Public Safety Committee, I have fought to stop cuts to the NYPD and District Attorneys, demanded more officers be assigned to our local precincts, and rallied to stop the closing of firehouses. I have created legislation to keep illegal guns off our streets and out of the hands of domestic violence offenders. In addition, I have worked to strengthen New York State’s DWI laws and abolish the statute of limitations on child sex offenders.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
I have led the fight to regulate cellular phone towers in residential neighborhoods and was successful in the battle to remove several towers from the roof of a building directly across from an elementary school. In addition, I continue to battle the proliferation of power plants in Western Queens and successfully forced the future closing of the Poletti Power Plant, one of the dirtiest in the country.
As the father of two young daughters, both in public school, I know how important it is that every child has a safe learning environment. That is why I introduced two bills that recently became law, one requiring security cameras in public schools and the second making crime data statistics available on the web.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
My experience as Councilmember and former Prosecutor has given me the expertise to fight for what matters most to the residents of Astoria. In my four years as Public Safety Chair crime has dropped to record lows and I will continue to fight for safe streets, a cleaner environment, and better schools.
