1. What is the most important issue in Council District 46 you would address if elected?
Of primary importance to our community is the provision of resources for our schools, parks, seniors and youth.
In 2003, I was proud to obtain the largest education budget restoration of any Member in the City, from obtaining the funding for a school air conditioning system in Gerritsen Beach and added school security systems in Canarsie and Mill Basin, to school library expansions in Bergen Beach and Canarsie and computer labs and laptops in Mill Island, Canarsie, Marine Park and Sheepshead Bay.
In my first two terms, I restored school crossing guards, municipal ambulance services and senior citizen weekend meals. I fought to keep both the JASA Canarsie and Abe Stark Senior Centers open and achieved the restoration of the Summer Youth Employment Program, ensuring 40,000 summer jobs for our City’s youth.
I’ve obtained funding for a new youth center and programs in Canarsie and Bergen Beach, an anti-graffiti program for Gerritsen Beach and Bergen Beach and an electrical upgrade of the Mill Basin library. I’ve secured funding for a Greenstreets restoration of Fraser Square, the construction of a new field house in Marine Park that will serve as both a senior and community center and the total restoration of Canarsie Park.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
I’ll continue to address the need for development outside of Manhattan that would provide jobs for all kinds of businesses, including small businesses in the outer boroughs and for all people.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I believe I’ve proven myself through my years of experience in civic activities, my knowledge of all the communities in the district and my record of delivering for my district, Brooklyn and the City since being a Council Member.
