1. What is the most important issue in Council District 47 you would address if elected?
We must grow and diversify the New York City economy. For decades, NY’s economy has been totally dependent on Wall Street and the financial services industry for tax revenue. We can’t put all our economic eggs in one basket, because when Wall Street sneezes, the rest of the City gets the flu. I want to encourage growth in the fields of light manufacturing, entertainment and technology.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Protect Seniors & Children: Rudy Giuliani and Mike Bloomberg have cut crime rates for over a decade, but more must be done to make seniors and children safer. As Council Member, I would work to increase penalties for those who victimize the oldest and youngest members of society.
Improving our Schools: New York City spends more per capita on each student than almost any other city in the nation. Yet we all see the the results of an educational system that still needs serious improvement. Mayor Bloomberg’s reforms have helped, but much more needs to be done. And throwing money at the problem is not the answer.
Security & Safety: Our City is still a major terrorist target, and the politicians have done little to address issues of safety and security in the schools, subways, and other public venues in New York. It’s not a question of if terrorists will attack New York again – it’s when. I will work with leaders in both parties to get our fair share of anti-terrorism funds, and fight to protect our great City.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I’m independent, energetic and enthusiastic. And my service with the U.S. Army in Iraq demonstrated my commitment to our nation. Now I’m back home, and I want to work in the City Council to institute the kind of reforms we need to make New York City an even better place to live, work and raise a family.
