1. What is the most important issue in Manhattan you would address if elected?
The elimination of the Borough Presidency. It is privilege without responsibility.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
The only other issues are urban land issues, such as the expansion of Columbia University. This office was sheared of all responsibility by the US Supreme Court in 1989.
Instead of eliminating this highly paid job, politicians added perks to it. This is like hanging ornaments on a dead Christmas tree. The tree is dead. It has been dead for 20 years. Our City is cutting budgets and employees. It is far better that voters eliminate politicians, than politicians eliminate voters.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
The road to eliminating this office runs through Manhattan. Of all boroughs, it has the least excuse for keeping the job. Other boroughs sometimes see their borough presidency as representing lost sovereignty. Given that the past six mayors of New York City lived in Manhattan, the claim that Manhattan Borough President is the mayor of Manhattan is ludicrous. A majority vote for a candidate dedicated to this issue is the mandate New York needs to move forward. The vote in Manhattan is less influenced by these sovereignty issues. The road also runs through a party line other than the sitting Borough President line. The candidate to eliminate the office for Staten Island can not be a Conservative; nor can the candidate for elimination in Manhattan be a Democrat.
