1. What is the most important issue in Staten Island you would address if elected?
Creating jobs and improving our Borough economy is the number one issue that I will continue to address as Borough President. I have been successful in attracting job producing businesses such as Pratt Industries and NY Container Terminal to Staten Island. My goal is to create a more self-sustaining Borough economy with more local jobs for Staten Islanders to improve our quality of life and reduce commute times. The expansion of NY Container Terminal, attracting new companies and stores and creating new town centers throughout the Borough are just a few of my goals for the next four years.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
I will continue to enhance Staten Island parks and add to the 12,300 acres of parks that make up 30% of our land area, including the transformation of Fresh Kills into a world class park and the preservation of Goodhue Center. I will also continue to work with DOT and Mayor Bloomberg to improve the flow of traffic. Reviving the North Shore Railroad, opening the Fresh Kills roads, completing our service roads, adding intersection turn lanes and bringing "smart light" technology to our Borough are my top traffic relief priorities for the next four years.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
My 30 years of public service and my ability to work with elected officials of all parties are unique qualities that I will continue to bring to the office of Staten Island Borough President. I have a track record of negotiating for Staten Island, including the Heart Institute, Bloomingdale Park, Richmond University Medical Center, and the S89 bus connecting Staten Islanders to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. The South Beach Boardwalk is a prime example of what my experience, vision and commitment can accomplish for Staten Island. My ability to get things done for the people of Staten Island has been demonstrated over the past 7 1/2 years.
