1. What is the most important issue in Council District 5 you would address if elected?
I will continue to work to improve the quality of our city's public schools. As Chair of the City Council Subcommittee that approves new schools, I have overseen the approval of over 35,000 new school seats citywide. But here on the East Side, we are still facing an overcrowding crisis in our local schools. I will continue to work with parents and educators to open the schools we so desperately need. I will also build on my efforts to attract good teachers, enhance after-school activities and Pre-K, and expand programs for gifted and talented students.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
In these tough economic times, I will continue to work to hold taxes down, while still protecting the vital services that keep New York thriving and livable. That includes keeping our streets safe, and protecting our parks, libraries, and cultural institutions. I will also continue my work to protect tenants. Lastly, I've learned as a Councilwoman that the issues that matter most are often those that hit closest to home, like saving a bus stop that seniors depend on or quieting down neighborhood noise.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
During my first term in the City Council, I have worked hard to be an independent voice for our neighborhood - and get results. I passed bills to protect women's reproductive rights and to improve construction safety. I also secured funding for three new waterfront parks and got the city to start a public recycling program. And, I'll continue to focus on our long term challenges - from modernizing our infrastructure to mass transit to affordable housing. I hope that I can count on your support on November 3rd.
