1. What is the most important issue in Council District 34 you would address if elected?
I have dedicated my career to working with local community groups to create and preserve affordable housing. I am extremely proud of my work, but there is still more to be done. In addition to securing the development of multiple new housing projects, I am spearheading the weatherization program for Lindsay Park, provided over $6 million for security systems in Bushwick Hylan, Hope Gardens and Cooper Park and $10 million for housing preservation, legal services and anti-harassment programs for both tenants and Co-op owners.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
I will keep working to create excellent schools, good paying jobs and healthy neighborhoods. I am proud to have funded computer labs in every school in my district and science labs in every middle school. I will continue to fight for local jobs, building on the $20 million fund I secured to create local small business and manufacturing jobs, and the $1 million program for job placement, training and retention. I funded rebuilding the Women's Health Center at Woodhull Hospital, and authorized over $4 million for preventive programs to educate residents on asthma, hypertension, obesity and other illnesses that disproportionately affect our community.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I know this community. I know what it needs. I was born and raised in the district I now represent, was the first in my family to attend college and I am proud to be the first Dominican woman elected to office in NY. During my tenure as a Council Member I have strived to protect and expand access to basic human rights: affordable housing, education, youth and senior services, jobs and safe communities. And I have delivered! My commitment to the people of my community is stronger than ever. My experience and know-how will deliver four more years of results for Williamsburg, Bushwick and Ridgewood.
