1. What is the most important issue in Manhattan you would address if elected?

The housing crisis and lack of comprehensive development planning. Historically, development has been done in a piecemeal approach, without considering the effects on other neighborhoods. When large-scale projects are proposed, the development of housing, power, water, transportation, schools and hospitals need to be addressed as well. We must have no less than 30% affordable housing units for middle-income people in any proposed plan.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

The protection of public hospitals and strategic use of capital dollars by investing in state-of-the-art technologies and infrastructure. Investing in children and education by overseeing and funding construction of libraries, science labs, lower class sizes, early education programs, and training for teachers. The protection of constitutional and civil rights for all New Yorkers.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

My experience and record on the issues most important to Manhattan proves I am the best candidate for Borough President. Since 1978, I have been actively involved in preserving and creating affordable housing for middle- and low-income people, seniors, the disabled, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Throughout my career, I have been involved in a wide range of community concerns, including: the increase of enrollment of children of color in gifted educational programs; building state-of-the-art school laboratories and libraries; preserving public housing, gardens and historical sites; creating the state’s only Girls’ Club, promoting cultural arts centers; supporting small businesses; obtaining equal access for the disabled and elderly; and requiring inspections of public roadways to protect against electrocutions. I have sponsored and authored countless pieces of legislation that have helped millions of New Yorkers. As the Council’s Manhattan Budget Negotiator, I have strategically funded services and programs to greatly improve the lives of all residents.
