1. What is the most important issue in Council District 21 you would address if elected?
District 21 is one of the most over crowded school districts. More classrooms and a lower student-teacher ratio insures individualized attention, more teachers and classroom space are desperately needed. We deserve our fair share of the State budget for school construction, more teachers, equipment and supplies to prepare our children for a competitive work force. I am bringing City resources into our district.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Affordable housing, violence and access to health care are important issues in District 21. Due to a lack of affordable housing, over crowding and illegal conversions have become major problems. We can address this with the construction of low and moderate income housing.
As a member of the Council’s Public Safety Committee stopping gang related violence and hit-and-runs is a priority. We need stiffer penalties, better traffic controls, and a more visible police presence that will help deter gang violence and the recent rise in hit and runs.
District 21 has one of the highest incidents of Asthma and TB. We need more local walk-in clinics to help administer TB testing, combat the rising cost of health care and relieve overcrowded emergency rooms. We need stronger pollution controls to lower the incidence of respiratory diseases, such as Asthma.
I have allocated funding of a mobile mammography unit for screenings throughout our neighborhoods to combat Breast Cancer and funded a 1 million dollar renovation for the Elmhurst Hospital HIV/AIDS Clinic.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I introduced a resolution condemning newly passed federal law that disproportionately harms NYC communities of color. I co-sponsored Lead Paint Protection legislation. I secured millions in capital funding for the construction and renovation of the Langston Hughes and Corona Library branches. My experience on the City Council paired with my knowledge of the community makes me the best choice for re-election to the City Council in District 21.
