1. What is the most important issue in the city you would address if elected?

That NYC loses $24 billion every year in over-taxation to the State and Federal government. This drain on our critical financial resources prevents us from hiring more cops, securing potential terrorist targets such as our ports, and building new schools and infrastructure. Since we know that leaders in Congress and Albany don’t share the same values as New Yorkers, and will never give us our fair share, we need to reevaluate our relationship with the state and federal government. We need to pass a cost of living adjustment for all federal and state taxes to stop sending them all this extra money that they end up using for pork-barrel projects all across America when we face such urgent needs here at home.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

We need to find innovative ways to improve mass transportation and other municipal services while reducing their overall cost. Most cities in America are using public-private partnerships and competitive bidding to improve service while cutting costs by up to 40%.

We also need to expand charter schools in NYC and implement a school voucher program for the 100,000 poorest kids in the city’s worst failing schools. Children of wealthy parents already have schools tailored to their needs and the right to choose the school they attend. I believe it is time for poor children to have these same options.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

The office of Public Advocate is by its nature an office that that should be independent of partisan politics with the office holder not afraid to fight for what is in the best interest of the people of New York City – no matter whose toes get stepped on. I am exactly that kind of person. I have been both a Republican and a Democrat, and have received honors from the Independence Party for my commitment to doing what I believe is right and honest. I have fought with the party machines on both sides to make sure that the political process is open, fair and inclusive for every New Yorker. As Public Advocate, I will not sit by silently while anyone’s parochial interests guide public policy in NYC.
