New NYC Votes Site Makes Registering to Vote Easy
NYC Votes and TurboVote launch new site ahead of registration deadline; voters will receive a postage paid envelope if printed form required.
With just 24 days until New York's voter registration deadline, NYC Votes and TurboVote have launched an online platform to make registering to vote easy for city voters (nycvotes.turbovote.org). The platform will be available by visiting Voting.NYC and clicking on "Voter Registration."
Any city resident can use the portal to get on the voter rolls before the 2020 Presidential election and it will streamline the process for all eligible city voters.
City voters who have a NYS DMV ID will be registered seamlessly with that system.
Voters who do not have a NYS DMV ID will receive a pre-filled form to sign and send to the Board of Elections. Voters can choose to receive the pre-filled form and a postage-paid, addressed envelope, or they can print the pre-filled form themselves and mail it immediately. The registration will not be complete until this form is mailed to and processed by the Board of Elections.
NYC Votes partnered with TurboVote, a leading civic technology non-profit that has helped more than 7 million Americans register to vote since 2012, to provide a resource to counter a disturbing drop in voter registrations. In July, NYC Votes released a report showing that new voter registrations in New York City have plummeted by 49 percent in 2020 compared to 2016. With in-person voter registration events halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and no universally accessible online voter registration available to city voters, registering to vote has been more challenging than ever before.
"Short of a full online platform, this new site is the solution city voters need and deserve to participate in the 2020 elections," said Amy Loprest, Executive Director of the NYC Campaign Finance Board. "We are very excited to work with TurboVote to streamline voter registration for New Yorkers and we thank the TurboVote team for their dedication to our local democracy."
"We're committed to helping Americans vote, no matter the obstacles," said Seth Flaxman, CEO of Democracy Works. "Increasing voter registration during this pandemic requires a digital strategy. We're excited to work alongside NYC Votes to help New York voters register and make their voices heard in this election."
"As we continue to prepare for voting during a pandemic and ahead of one of the most consequential elections of our lifetimes, New Yorkers need easier and efficient ways to participate in November's election. DemocracyNYC thanks NYC Votes for its foresight in launching a system that allows New Yorkers to register to vote as seamlessly as possible online. We look forward to partnering and registering new voters," said Laura Wood, Senior Advisor and General Counsel for the Mayor's DemocracyNYC Initiative.
“Registering to vote should be safe and easy for all,” said Dr. Sarah Sayeed, Chair & Executive Director of the NYC Civic Engagement Commission. “We are proud to support the NYC Campaign Finance Board as they launch this new site which will ease the voter registration process to ensure all eligible city voters have the opportunity to participate in our democracy and elections.”

TurboVote is an online tool that helps Americans vote in every election—local, state, and national. It's easy to use and can help folks from all 50 states and D.C. overcome many of the process barriers to participation in our democracy. From modern day poll taxes and blatant and covert racial exclusion, to purposefully restrictive voter identification laws, our democracy was intentionally designed to make it difficult for many voters to cast their ballots with confidence and ease. Through the product design and intentional implementation strategies of our partners, TurboVote helps to lower process barriers for all eligible voters, and ensure that the voice of our electorate is powerful, heard, and moving toward a more fully enfranchised reality for all. TurboVote is a product of Democracy Works, a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that works to simplify, modernize, and increase accessibility around this country’s voting process.
