August 3, 2012

As of 5 p.m. today, five candidates for the November 6, 2012, special election in Council District 12 have filed certification forms to join New York City's voluntary Campaign Finance Program. Candidates must file certification forms with the Campaign Finance Board by the August 3 certification deadline in order to be eligible to receive public matching funds for the special election. Forms must be postmarked before midnight tonight to meet the deadline.

The following candidates have submitted certification forms:
Johnson, Pamela A
King, Andrew L
Nwachukwu, Joseph K
Simmons-Oliver, Cheryl
Welch, Michael

The first campaign finance disclosure filings for all candidates in the special election are due on Friday, October 5. All special election candidates, even those who do not participate in the matching funds program, are required to submit periodic disclosure statements. For a full list of deadlines, please visit the CFB's website.

To be eligible for public funding, participants must also appear on the ballot, have an opponent on the ballot, and meet the two-part contribution threshold. Contribution and spending limits and the threshold for public funds eligibility for the special election are available on the CFB website. Please note that the contribution limit for this election is $1,375. Contributions from NYC residents will be matched at a rate of $6-to-$1, up to $87.

Board rules adopted earlier this year requiring disclosure of independent expenditures will be in effect for this special election. Independent spenders follow the same disclosure schedule as candidates. More information about the rules is available on the CFB website.
