CFB Announces Fourth Public Funds Payments for 2009 General Elections to 55 Candidates, Issues Advisory Opinion

October 29, 2009
The New York City Campaign Finance Board today announced the payment of public matching funds for the 2009 general elections to qualifying candidates participating in the Campaign Finance Program. A total of $1,539,694 was distributed to 55 candidates who qualified for matching funds on this fourth and final pre-election payment date. For a list of candidates, please see below.

By joining New York City’s voluntary Campaign Finance Program, candidates agree to abide by strict spending limits. In return, candidates in the Program may qualify for public matching funds. The Program matches each dollar a New York City resident gives, up to $175 per contributor, with six dollars in public funds, for a maximum of $1,050 in public funds per contributor.

Advisory opinion. The Board also issued an advisory opinion to provide guidance to candidates who terminate their candidacy during an election cycle after raising funds, including candidates in the 2009 election cycle not covered by the terms of AO 2008-7, which concerned the impact of legislation extending term limits on candidates for City office. The advisory opinion issued today provides guidance concerning the funds raised by these candidates, and clarifies that the benefits of AO 2008-7 will not be extended beyond those candidates who met that AO’s specific criteria. The advisory opinion will be posted here later today.
