CFB Chairman's Statement on Appointment of Former Board Member Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court

May 26, 2009

“We applaud President Obama’s choice to appoint Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“As one among a distinguished group of founding appointees to the Campaign Finance Board, Sonia Sotomayor helped establish a tradition of independence and non-partisanship for the Board that is still central to its present-day mission.

“Judge Sotomayor’s service set the emerging Campaign Finance Program on a strong foundation that helped it evolve into one of New York City’s key good-government institutions and a model for public campaign financing programs nationwide.”

Judge Sotomayor was appointed to the New York City Campaign Finance Board by Mayor Edward I. Koch in June 1988, and served through September 1992. During her tenure, the Board made its first payments of public funds to candidates for City office, on July 27, 1989.
