June 10, 2009 Is The Last Day for Candidates to Join the New York City Campaign Finance Program

June 8, 2009

Wednesday, June 10 is the deadline for candidates running for mayor, comptroller, public advocate, borough president, or City Council to become eligible to receive public funds for the 2009 elections by joining New York City’s voluntary Campaign Finance Program. Only candidates participating in the Program receive matching funds.

Candidates may deliver certification forms to the office of New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB), the independent nonpartisan City agency that administers the public matching funds program. Candidates may also send forms by mail, as long as they are postmarked by June 10.

By joining New York City’s voluntary Campaign Finance Program, candidates agree to abide by contribution and spending limits and to provide detailed disclosure of their campaign finances. In return, candidates in the Program may qualify for public funds at a $6-to-$1 rate, for the first $175 of contributions from New York City residents.

Candidates may qualify for additional bonus matching rates when facing a high-spending opponent not participating in the Campaign Finance Program.

For a list of candidates who have joined the Program, visit the candidates page of the CFB’s website.

The Campaign Finance Board will be updating the list periodically throughout the day on June 10.

Voter Guide Submissions Also Due June 10

June 10 is also the deadline for candidates to submit materials for the New York City Voter Guide. The NYC Voter Guide is a unique, valuable, nonpartisan resource that is produced by the CFB and mailed to New York City voters before each municipal city election. The redesigned guide is published in a large, colorful, easy-to-read magazine-style and contains:

  • profiles submitted by the candidates
  • general information about voting
  • instructions for using the voting machines
  • a list of all candidates on the ballot at press time (including candidates who failed to submit a profile)
  • information on anticipated ballot proposals.

This deadline for the Voter Guide applies to all candidates running on major party lines, even if they don't expect to have a primary election. Independent candidates (those filing independent nominating petitions with the City Board of Elections) must submit their profiles by Wednesday, August 12, 2009.

Please contact the Press Unit at 212-306-7100 for more information on the Program and candidate participation.
