The New York City Youth Poet Laureate (YPL) program is a voter-themed spoken word competition designed to energize a population of new voters. This nonpartisan program is a joint partnership of the Campaign Finance Board and Urban Word NYC to promote voter registration, awareness, and civic participation. After a series of workshops and a final voting-themed poetry slam, the Youth Poet Laureate is named to travel the five boroughs performing poetry and speaking with youth groups on the importance of voting and civic service. For more information on the program, please visit www.nyccfb.info/voters.
April is National Poetry Month, and to commemorate, this year’s Youth Poet Laureate Justin Long Moton and the 2010 Poet Ambassadors, finalists in the 2010 slam, will be performing their voter poems across the city. Justin and the Poet Ambassadors will appear at various events during April. We hope to see you there!
