Over the last three
and a half years I’ve been a strong voice in the
council for equality, worker’s rights, women’s rights
and the LGBT community. Following my prior two decades
working to improve the quality of life for this
wonderful district of ours.
As a member of the City Council I’ve worked vigorously
with community members and City Councilmembers to
secure the resources necessary to strengthen this
very diverse district. I will continue to fight
for the many things we need to improve the quality
of life in our neighborhoods. I promise to continue
to work for more day care; improved public housing;
protection of our community gardens; affordable
housing; and further protection of worker’s rights.
During my incumbency I was able to bring over 15
million dollars of capital improvements to our district.
The money will be for improvements in our schools,
parks and libraries along with improvements to computer
and science labs for our youngest citizens. For
example, Seward Park Library and Park, Union Square
Park, P.S. 60, P.S. 61, P.S. 15, P.S. 110, P.S.
116, FDR Park, Colears Hook and NYCHA developments
throughout District 2.
Most recently, I began a campaign with other council
members to secure 5 million dollars for HIV+ people
of color. This is the first time in the history
of the NYC council that it has budgeted money specific
to the HIV+ communities of color. The 5 million
dollars will be spent in a variety of ways, with
an emphasis on advocacy, direct services, and preventive
education.
