I believe public servants
should be effective, just and creative.
In this regard I offer my record as an activist
and member of the City Council:
- I have continued my activism as an effective
voice on affordable housing and related issues.
- Fought to prevent displacement and fraud
by exposing the “HUD Mortgage Scandal (203K
loan).” 19 individuals indicted.
- Changed HPD’s 3rd Party Transfer Program
into homeownership opportunities for tenants.
Guaranteed affordable rents for all tenants
with subsidies where necessary.
- Funded computer and technology centers in
our public schools and libraries.
- Restored over $17 million in the budget towards
college prep courses for high school students,
scholarships, and full-time faculty for CUNY.
- Supported small businesses and new economic
development opportunities.
- As a budget negotiator secured funding for
art and cultural institutions.
- Expanded funding for Senior and Youth programs
including PROMISE, a new senior prescription
payment plan initiative.
I have been effective in raising public consciousness
around HIV/AIDS, rodent and pest management, infant
mortality and other important human and civil rights
issues.
New York City is widely acclaimed as the greatest
city in the world. Let us make it that way for everyone.
