My dear friends and members of the Special Committee
of 24,
My name is Nilda Luz Rexach, I am the executive
director of the National Advancement for Puerto
Rican Culture Inc.
We’re looking to get the declaration of Puerto Rico
as the State 51 of the United States of America. It
has been for a long time, it is, and it will be, the
state 51.
I want to thank everyone of you for your concern
about the situation of Puerto Rico. Your action is
urgently needed to resolve the political status of
Puerto Rico, USA.
We became a territory of the United States in 1898
and we all, (all Puerto Rican citizens) became
American citizens, since 1917 by the declaration of
the Jones Act. As American citizens the people in
Puerto Rico have the right to determine their own
destiny.
Our economic situation is not as bad as the rest of
the Caribbean nations. But we’re far from being
recognized as the common citizen of the United
States, our people have always suffered
discrimination, with many of our main rights as
American citizens, whom we are.
We do have certain rights, but not many of the basic
rights that others citizens of our nation have.
