My record of public
service includes working to improve our schools,
improving services and making neighborhoods safer.
I planned community health initiatives at the Morrisania
NFCC and the Bronx Health Plan. I have advised the
Bronx Clean Air Coalition and other environmental
justice groups.
I chaired Bronx Community Board 1’s Youth Services
Committee, where I set budget priorities and planned
youth services, and was president of the Sherman
Terrace Co-op Board. I serve on the Boards of youth,
cultural arts, and drug treatment agencies.
As a graduate of the Civilian Police Academy program,
I know that to be effective and lasting, issues
of race-relations and community relations must be
incorporated into every aspect of law enforcement
training.
During this Council campaign, I have advocated building
100,000 new housing units over five years. The City
Council must fund new housing construction in the
outer boroughs.
To improve public education, I propose making more
resources available to pupils, teachers, principals
and parents. I am opposed to privatization efforts,
i.e., vouchers, charter and Edison schools. To significantly
reduce class size, I will encourage the Board of
Education to lease environmentally sound buildings.
New teachers and paraprofessional teachers must
be hired to staff those new classrooms. I will work
to encourage more paraprofessionals to ascend the
career ladder and become teachers.
I lived in public housing and attended NYC public
schools, including the Bronx High School of Science.
I have done post-graduate work in urban planning
at NYU and Hunter College.
I will use my broad legislative, governmental and
community experience to get results and to make
a difference in the City Council.
