The road to community
empowerment must enable people to connect with the
meaningful sources of power that transforms and
enrich their lives. These sources include education,
economics, equal justice, equal opportunity, and
in New York, the ability to bind diversity of cultures
into a robust coalition for change.
Twenty-nine years ago, I took this road as I left
Freetown, Sierra Leone (founded by former American
slaves) to become a citizen of the United States
and a father of three Brooklyn bred children.
I have productively:
- Mobilized community leaders to complete
a $200 million Kings County Hospital Center
with the assurance that community based vendors
procured contract opportunities
- Facilitated the establishment of Emigrant
Savings Bank Scholarship for Fort Greene students
- Facilitated 1/2 million dollar loan
for home owners in Brooklyn
- Led the demonstration for academic reform
at Downstate University
- Advocated for the enactment of the amnesty
legislation for all immigrants’ rights.
When elected to the city council for the 35th district
in Brooklyn, I will use my expertise as a consensus
builder to:
- Enable our schools to partner with parents
in achieving higher standards by accelerating
modernization of our school and increasing teacher
salaries
- Make quality healthcare a right and
not a privilege
- Ensure the enactment of job protection
with a wage increase provision
- Continue my initiative to promote police-community
relations in the 35th district.
- Create meaningful partnerships with
community-based businesses for economic development,
investment and trade promoting employment and
increasing wealth.
With my grassroots community leadership, we will
build on the goodwill of the people in District
35 to work together for the benefit of all.
