First, thank you very much for re-electing me in 2001. Since then as chair of the City Council’s Consumer Affairs Committee I have shepherded legislation into law regarding predatory lending, sidewalk cafes, cell phones in theatres, and other quality of life issues. As a member of the Public Safety, Health, Cultural Affairs, and Governmental Operations Committees, I continue to fight for equal benefits, fairness, and justice for all New Yorkers regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or income. This past term we passed a landmark living wage bill and legislation ensuring that a woman’s right to choose is not compromised. And there’s more work to be done.
I’m especially proud of my record in protecting tenants rights with passage of laws to maintain rent regulations and advocating for tenants in our community with direct services. In every part of the district I have secured funding to rebuild our city parks, purchase computers for the classrooms, and upgrade our libraries. I have also been instrumental in the development of over 2,500 units of affordable housing. I have been a tenacious advocate for the long term needs of our communities, having successfully led the fight to keep the Museum of the City of New York from leaving East Harlem to move downtown. Perhaps most importantly my office continues to provide outstanding constituent services full time in both English and Spanish.
If re-elected this will be my last two years on the Council. I pledge to continue championing our diversity, promoting economic development, funding our public schools, and fighting for the core values that make us proud to be New Yorkers, fairness and justice.
I appreciate your support. For more information about me or our campaign please e-mail us at Friendsofphilreed@hotmail.com. THANK YOU
