Councilwoman Maria Baez Envisions a Bright and Exciting Future for the Community.
When I became Councilwoman of the 14th Council District in 2001, you and I went to work and developed a new and vibrant partnership. The energy, faith, and devotion we put into this partnership has brought hope into our community. From one end of the district to the other you can see the results of this partnership.
With the help of older adults in our community, I have been able to prevent cuts to senior centers, and programs that benefit older adults. Together with the help of parents and principles we have begun to reshape and revitalize our public schools. To address your concerns about healthcare, we at the City Council passed the Health Insurance Mobilization Act to ensure that public health insurance reaches every community. In response to the long delays that our women face in scheduling mammograms, I along with St. Barnabas sponsored a public campaign to encourage women to come out to the district and receive mammograms. The advocacy of the working families in the community inspired us at the City Council to pass a law that mandates payment of a living wage for more than 50,000 low-wage workers. Despite difficult economic times, I have been able to secure resources to fund organizations that provide programs for housing, youth, older adults, education, and the homeless. I could not have accomplished any of this without the help of those of you who elected me and continued to work with me to make our community a better place.
These accomplishments prove what we can do together, despite serious economic and social challenges. However, this is not a time to stop our progress. We must stand united in our determination to give our children and grandchildren the advantages needed to realize the full promise of the future. It is time for the 14th Council District to make a solid down payment on a better and more beautiful future for generations to follow. With your continued support we can accomplish this. Vote for Councilwoman Maria Baez.
