Tony Avella has been a strong independent voice in the City Council on our behalf, most notably when he voted against the 18.49% property tax increase.
Tony has worked to eliminate waste and find new revenue sources to balance the budget without raising taxes or decreasing services. His knowledge of constituent issues and legislation gained through years of public service experience has enabled him to have a positive impact on the quality of life in Northeast Queens.
Tony, along with Borough President Marshall, was responsible for ending the seven-week private bus strike, which impacted thousands of Queens residents. Tony continues to fight for our schools and to preserve our high education standards.
As City Council Zoning and Franchises Chair, he is leading the fight to preserve the residential character of our neighborhoods and change the “community facilities” part of the zoning code.
Tony is working to keep our streets safe by advocating for more police officers and for a new precinct for College Point, Whitestone, and Bay Terrace. He continues to eliminate graffiti, prevent car theft and ensure that our Little League, Soccer, and Roller Hockey teams have fields to play on.
He drafted a City Council Resolution condemning credit card companies for supporting Neo-Nazi hate-mongers.
Tony introduced landmark legislation to improve traffic safety. He demanded and received action from the Buildings Department to stop illegal and improper development. Tony fought to restore funding for our libraries and senior citizen services. He successfully fought to keep the Whitestone/JASA Senior Center open despite its threatened closure from budget cuts.
Tony Avella is proud to represent us in the City Council and would be even prouder to be re-elected as our voice in City government.
