As your Councilman, Jim Sutliff will focus on the following issues:
Pro Economic Growth: Economic growth is the only conceivable way to return New York City to prosperity. The tax increases of the last year will only serve to slow an already measured economy. There does not appear to be extensive analysis of the effects of increased taxation and a hard look at alternatives before tax hikes are adopted. Government should be limited in size and not stand in the way of economic growth.
Education: Today, technology has become a major driving force in our economy, and our students need a different kind of education. Students need a better foundation in math and science, and the subjects of computer science and finance should be included as a regular part of the curriculum. Our children need to obtain these skills so that they can compete in the job market of the future.
Environment: The upgrade of the waste transfer station at Bay 41st Street and Shore Parkway is currently the number one budget priority of Community Board 11, but the surrounding community has been given little to no information about the planned changes. The environmental impact statement was inadequate when dealing with the impact of increased truck traffic rumbling through our neighborhoods.
Quality of Life: We need our Community Boards to be responsive to the communities that they serve and represent. Issues of over-development and increased truck traffic have become critical over the past few years. Jim Sutliff will appoint Community Board Members to Boards 11, 13, & 15 who will listen to our concerns and act in the best interest of our community.
