1. What is the most important issue in Council District 2 you would address if elected?
Preserving the character of our neighborhoods is important on many levels. Growth and change should reflect the unique qualities of our communities, not block our light and air. Zoning designations need to be modernized; industrial uses refer to yesteryear. The benefit of tax breaks and variances should be given to those who address our needs of affordable housing and employment. Inclusionary zoning is a misleading term that allows builders to permanently change our neighborhoods to increase their profits. Development should benefit our citizens and improve the worth of our collective urban experience.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Jobs are an issue on Avenue D and on Fifth Avenue. We need to keep jobs here and find innovative ways to encourage individual and group enterprise for a changing workforce. In transportation, we must improve parking options and keep subway personnel in the stations. The 18th Street stop on the No. 6 line should be re-opened. I also support the proposal to collect a 1/2 cent stock transfer fee to support our schools.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I have lived in this District for 29 years. My background in public finance has given me the skill to analyze municipal budgets. We need a Council representative who knows firsthand the issues faced by all the people and businesses of the Central Village, Union Square, Gramercy, Flatiron, Murray Hill, the East Village and the Lower East Side. Thank you for considering my candidacy.
