1. What is the most important issue in Council District 6 you would address if elected?

After countless hours listening to constituents I know the most important issue in our district is affordable housing. My office has two full-time staff who stop illegal evictions, counsel renters on their rights and negotiate with landlords and developers. We’ll continue to fight to preserve Mitchell-Lama housing and rent-regulated units, continue co-op and condo tax abatements, and expand SCRIE. I support affordable units in all new developments and set-asides for teachers and the uniformed services.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

Health Insurance: Provide coverage for uninsured workers through my sponsorship and passage of the Health Security Act; Schools: Increased funding to reduce class size, enhance after-school programs, arts and sports; Seniors: More support for frail seniors and NORC programs; no health care reduction and improved Access-a-Ride, home care and meal services; Quality of Life: I will continue to fight for small businesses and to increase park, mall and community garden funding; Next up: reducing traffic congestion and a noise reduction law.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

Accessibility: Westsiders know I’m a 24/7 Councilmember. My storefront office is open late and on weekends; we pioneered a mobile office for underserved areas, and we are a constant presence at community events. Education: Created an education office with a schools specialist, won a new middle school for our kids, built public-private partnerships to improve facilities and publish the city’s best parent guide to schools. Governance: As co-chair of the Manhattan City Council delegation I have opened the budget process to thousands of community groups and set funding priorities. Improving Lives: As Technology Committee Chair, I’m pursuing low cost high speed internet for underserved communities. I authored the nation’s first law ensuring that employers’ and domestic workers’ rights are protected. I sponsored legislation protecting the rights of the LGBT community, and each year I have brought millions of dollars into our community to strengthen our uniformed services, schools, parks, arts, youth and senior services, and libraries. I remain most proud of my record of working closely with all of the West Side’s wonderful and diverse community.
