1. What is the most important issue in Council District 19 you would address if elected?
In my first 3 and 1/2 years in office I have been leading the fight against overdevelopment, the single most important issue in my district. I am proud to have achieved the first serious reforms to the City’s zoning code in over forty years to stop overdevelopment in Northeast Queens. This included eliminating the zoning abuses by new religious institutions and medical offices, rezoning our communities to prevent the construction of multiple dwellings in place of one or two family homes, and developing a new zoning category, R2A, which eliminates the loopholes that allow for the huge “McMansions” to be built.
If reelected, I will continue my rezoning and preservation efforts until every neighborhood is protected and the quality of life is preserved.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
I will continue to ensure that our schools are the best in the City. Over the past three years, I obtained almost $5 million in the City budget to upgrade our school libraries, computer labs, and other facilities so that our children receive the best education possible.
As a vocal advocate for my district, I will continue to fight for additional funding for our libraries and senior services, more police officers, and a new police precinct for College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
My knowledge of constituent issues and legislation gained through many years of public service experience has enabled me to have a positive impact on the quality of life in Northeast Queens. Using that experience, I have been able to obtain key funding for new parks, enact historic legislation to preserve the City’s landmarks, keep our streets safe, and ensure that we are receiving our fair share of City services.
I am proud to represent the residents of Northeast Queens in the City Council and they have my continued commitment to be accessible and work tirelessly each and every day on their behalf.
