1. What is the most important issue in Council District 33 you would address if elected?
The biggest challenges facing our district are rapid development and rising housing costs. My goals are to promote development that is beneficial to our neighborhoods, and to minimize traffic and overbuilding.
In Greenpoint-Williamsburg, I pushed through a waterfront revitalization plan that will transform empty factories into apartments and parks. At my insistence, affordable housing was built into the plan, which will produce more than 3,000 apartments for middle-income and working families. In Downtown Brooklyn, the commercial district around Metrotech is poised to expand, and an arena may be built. In response, I have proposed traffic mitigation and "residential parking permits" to preserve on-street parking for residents.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
I am determined to create more top-quality middle schools. This year, more than 1,000 fifth-graders did not get assigned to any of the schools they had chosen – forcing parents to accept placement in schools they were unhappy with. To improve this, I have pushed to fund smaller classes and specialized teacher training in our area.
I will also continue to fight our growing asthma epidemic. I created a pilot program for "clean-air cabs" – taxis fueled by natural gas or gas-electric hybrids. The next step is to convert the entire taxi fleet.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
As the City Council Member since 2002, I have stood firmly for progressive values and for smart, effective government.
I took on irresponsible gun companies with the “Gun Industry Responsibility Act.” The law will hold gun manufactures and dealers liable when their reckless sales practices result in the injury of a New Yorker. My “Junk Food-Free Schools Act” eliminated candy and soda from public school vending machines. My "False Claims Act" is expected to reap $30 million for City taxpayers by allowing whistleblowers to sue businesses and individuals who defraud the City.
