1. What is the most important issue in Council District 39 you would address if elected?
My children don’t go to public school. However, we cannot afford to send the girls to private or parochial school. That is one of the reasons why I stay home to teach them. I know that not everyone can do this and I look forward to good public schools where we can all feel comfortable sending our children. The proper care, education and training of our children is so important to our society. All our children must have the opportunity to take advantage of the best that we can provide.
I believe that parents are the ultimate authority in these areas. But parents will need help to make sound decisions concerning schools and teachers. Therefore, as a member of the City Council, I would establish parent organizations for the sharing of pertinent information, with educational choice as a priority.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
No matter what the City Council does, it involves taxpayer money. Too often good ideas become expensive failures. Every program initiated by the Council should include a specific review date to measure how effective it has been and how much it has really cost us. A grading system should be established using generally accepted accounting principles, to evaluate the success or failure of a program. Failing programs should be discontinued.
Another issue that is important to us is safety. While things have gotten better over the past 12 years, this neighborhood still has safety concerns that need to be addressed.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
As a Hispanic living in this neighborhood for nearly 30 years, it has given me a unique perspective on the changes that have occurred over the past three decades. Throughout that time I have been able to talk with my neighbors, listen to their concerns, and think about what we all live with daily. I believe you will find I have a sensible approach to solving problems that will go a long way to making our neighborhood a better place to live, work and play in.
