1. What is the most important issue in Council District 51 you would address if elected?
The most urgent issue facing the South Shore of Staten Island is over-development. What was once considered the most suburban of New York City’s 5 boroughs is transforming into a overwhelmingly congested region. The South Shore specifically is being stripped of it’s woodland area and replaced with big name real estate development deals and shopping centers. Additionally, our main roads, side streets, highways and schools have not been properly maintained or updated to accommodate our dramatic population increase.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Wal-Mart is looking to open their first New York City location in Staten Island. This would be an incredible blow to the community. Wal-mart has an extremely controversial history and their potential presence on Staten Island should be a concern to all residents. Their repeated disregard for the well being for their employees and the local businesses they erode must be seriously investigated – not just by public officials, but by their constituents through town hall forums.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I have dedicated my entire professional career to serving a specific portion of the community. This office will allow me to further branch out and advocate for all residents in the 51st Council district. I will dedicate myself to protecting family-friendly businesses as big business continues to focus on Staten Island. Richmond County is the nation’s largest small-town. I will devote my time to listening to the concerns of my constituents as well as arranging regular town hall meetings to create a dialogue between community members. A true public servant is one who carefully considers the opinions of those he or she represents before even considering legislation. As the son of a NYC public school teacher I am concerned with overcrowding in our public schools.
