1. What is the most important issue in the city you would address if elected?
As Comptroller, it is my job to protect the fiscal integrity of our City and ensure that government is accountable. I will continue to work hard so that City services are delivered in the most efficient and equitable way possible. In the past four years, my office has uncovered more than $130 million in potential savings through exhaustive audits of City agencies and made thousands of recommendations to make our City services more cost effective.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Being Comptroller entails more than watching the City’s books – it means creating opportunity for the people of our City. I will do all I can to make New York a place where families can thrive by continuing to invest City dollars in affordable housing and fighting to improve our school system. Just as I led the battle against harmful changes in the City’s Meals-On-Wheels program for seniors, forced the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to open its books to the public and fought City contractors to pay their workers a living wage, I will continue to fight for what’s right for New Yorkers.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
When I took office as your Comptroller in 2002, I vowed to carry out my duties on behalf of all New Yorkers. I have delivered on that promise by serving as a vigorous guardian of the City’s finances, uncovering millions in budget savings. I’ve invested millions of pension dollars right here in New York City, creating affordable housing and jobs throughout the five boroughs, and bringing neighborhood bank branches to underserved communities. I’ve been an advocate for New Yorkers from all walks of life, fighting for fair wages and better access to health care, finding ways to solve our housing crisis, and making our schools more accountable. I hope I can count on your vote.
