1. What is the most important issue in the city you would address if elected?
With Mike Bloomberg as Mayor, New York City is becoming so expensive it’s turning into a private playground that only the very wealthiest can afford. I want to build a city that works for all New Yorkers, where everybody has the opportunity to build a good life. The job starts in our public schools. Every single child in New York City deserves a great education – not just those who can afford it. If I am Mayor, we will lower class size, provide quality after-school programs, build new schools, invest in existing ones, and sign a contract with the teachers that will be good for students and for teachers. And I will make sure we have the money to do it with my School Investment Plan, which is the first step toward getting the $23 billion that Albany owes our schools.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Everything I do will have one goal in mind – to make sure every New Yorker has the opportunity to build a good life, and people aren’t forced to move because prices are out of control. That means a firm commitment to affordable housing, so middle and working-class families can afford good homes. That means fully funding the MTA and managing it effectively so we have safe, reliable and affordable trains and buses. And that means a commitment to creating good jobs in every neighborhood. Half of all African-American men are unemployed; that’s wrong, and I have a plan for real economic development to bring jobs to our city.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I want to build a city that works for all New Yorkers, with good public schools, affordable housing, access to good health care, and opportunity for everyone. I grew up with a single mother in The Bronx. I was able to build a good life because my mother worked hard and New York gave me opportunities - good teachers, after-school programs and scholarships. I’ve dedicated my life to creating these kinds of opportunities for all people who live in the city I love, and I will continue to do so as Mayor.
