1. What is the most important issue in Council District 8 you would address if elected?
Overdevelopment, Displacement, Eminent Domain Abuse. Work to repeal recent "River-to-River" 125th St. Rezoning, which uses eminent domain and threatens to displace thousands of residents and community-based businesses. I will fight to preserve Harlem community populations and existing structures.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Education and Class-size. Restore and reuse currently empty P.S. 109 as a public school. Work closely with groups like Class Size Matters and Community Education Councils.
Housing. Repeal vacancy de-control, expand and strengthen rent stabilization. Stop the replacement of NYCHA with NYPD.
Senior Citizens. Create a task force to stop landlords from harassing senior citizens who live in protected housing. Strengthen SCREE and DRIEE.
Historic Preservation. Strengthening laws to create more historic districts and landmarks, working with Landmarks Conservancy, and work to create jobs not destructive to the community.
Green Energy: Replace all diesel buses with electric buses in next two years. In addition, expand windmill and solar usage.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
Gwen Goodwin stands alone among the contenders for the District 8 seat on the above combination of issues. An accomplished reformer and doer in her own right, even prior to entering the City Council. Gwen embodies the idea that "We are the people we've been waiting for!"
