Why is one-party rule to be despised in China or
the old Soviet Union but here in Brooklyn we are
told that one party-rule—with all its attendant
cronyism and autocracy—is our political reality
and we better just accept it?
Is this realism or lack of imagination?
As Borough President I will offer a progressive
and radical vision for Brooklyn that the machine
politicians cannot offer.
I will fight for grassroots democracy by creating
democratically elected Community Boards. I will
work to guarantee immigrants the right to vote in
local and school board elections. I will advocate
for real independent oversight of police. I will
fight to end the toxic spraying of our
neighborhoods. I will work to bring true free
speech radio back to WBAI and help communities
create their own media by fostering the creation
of low-powered radio stations.
I believe that the solutions for our most
intractable problems lie not in City Hall or City
Council or even the Borough President’s office. My
campaign will focus on meeting with neighborhood
organizations and individuals throughout Brooklyn
to hear their concerns and solutions to issues
ranging from police brutality, improving schools,
the energy crisis, lack of affordable housing,
poverty, unemployment, environmental problems and
others.
The Greens are building a multi-racial party
grounded on economic and social justice and
environmental sustainability. We urge you to join
a growing movement of people who are creating a
different tomorrow. Another world is possible.
